MUNICH Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann demanded on Friday of the EU and the EC to urgently reintroduce visas for the citizens of Serbia and Macedonia. Herrmann cited a large number of asylum seekers from the two countries. Germany: Increasing calls to reintroduce visas He said there was an urgent need to act in order to control the dramatic increase in the number of people requesting asylum. He demanded that the EU and European Commission instantly end the visa-free regime for Serbia and Macedonia, his ministry stated. Herrmann is concerned over the increase in asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia and pointed out that there were 170 requests for asylum from the two countries in August of 2011, followed by 1,411 requests in August this year and 3,421 in September. More and more calls to reintroduce visas for Serbia and Macedonia can be heard in Germany, and, besides a number of provincial ministers of interior, Germany's Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich has also reacted and asked for a review of the visa-free regime. Friedrich, a member of the Christian Social Union from Bavaria, a sister party to the Christian Democratic Union of Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said that visa-free travel should not be abused. There were 68 requests for asylum from Serbia in January 2010, 697 in January this year and 1,395 in September. Asylum seekers and visa-free access for Serbian and Macedonian citizens will be on the agenda of the summit of EU interior ministers on October 25, German media report. Serbian asylum seekers, the 4,300 of them who filed an asylum request in Germany in the first eight months of this year, with only 0.3 percent gaining asylum, are obviously the main cause of displeasure for the German authorities, who now wish to temporarily suspend the visa-free regime, but also to significantly shorten the related procedure, to 48 hours. The statistical data says, and the German press reports, that more than 90 percent of asylum requests from Serbia and Macedonia come from Roma applicants. Tanjug
