PODGORICA A former inmate of the notorious Lora prison in Split, Croatia, says the prisoners there were subjected to cruel torture by members of the Croatian military. Veselin Bojovic was a Montenegrin reserve soldier in the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), who served and was imprisoned in the early 1990s. Witness speaks about horrors in Croatian prison Bojovic made the statement before the Montenegrin Prosecution during a hearing, to add that Croatian Army guards had forced prisoners to sing Ustasha (WW2 Nazi-allied Independent State of Croatia regime) songs and to bark like dogs, as well as subjected them to unprecedented physical abuse. During the hearing today Bojovic also told the Montenegrin Prosecution that the guards tortured the prisoners by attaching wires to their body and letting electric current through. The hearing was conducted at the request of the Croatian Prosecutor's Office as part of the investigation into the events happening at the Lora prison during the conflicts at the time of breakup of the former Yugoslavia, according to Podgorica-based daily Dan. Bojovic said that a group of former JNA reservists from the region of the Montenegrin cities of Niksic and Savnik had been detained and massacred in the prison near Split. One of them had one of his eyes pulled out, another had his ear severed, blood covering their entire faces, Bojovic said recalling the horrors at the camp. Bojovic was released as part of a prisoner exchange in August 1992. According to data from Croatian non-governmental organizations, a total of 1,005 prisoners had been sent to the Lora prison camp between 1992 and the summer of 1997, 75 of whom died there. Eight people were sentenced to between four- and eight-year prison terms for murdering two Serbs, beatings and other abuse at the Lora camp, and the first accused Tomislav Dujic, who was tried in absentia, is still at large. Of the eight convicted persons, five were also accused for a killing of three members of the former JNA at the Lora II camp. The first instance proceedings in this case are underway. Tanjug
