Hundreds of diplomats, lawyers and activists are gathered in Paris to launch their campaign aimed at abolishing the death penalty.

PARIS Hundreds of diplomats, lawyers and activists are gathered in Paris to launch their campaign aimed at abolishing the death penalty. This form of punishment is still implemented in about 60 countries worldwide. Campaign underway to abolish death penalty A meeting that will be held at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also see participation of lawyers of Iranian, Chinese, Japanese and American citizens who had been sentenced to death. Later in the day, former French Minister of Justice Robert Badinter is expected to address the gathering. Badinter is credited with the work that led to the abolition of the death penalty in his country in 1981. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius organized in late September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly a meeting dedicated to the same subject, which was attended by representatives of around 50 countries.
