Campaign underway to abolish death penalty

PARIS Hundreds of diplomats, lawyers and activists are gathered in Paris to launch their campaign aimed at abolishing the death penalty. This form of punishment is still implemented in about 60 countries worldwide. Later in the day, former French Minister of Justice Robert Badinter is expected to address the gathering. Badinter is credited with the work that led to the abolition of the death penalty in his country in 1981.
