BELGRADE Vojin Dimitrijevic, an international law expert and Belgrade Center for Human Rights director, died at the age of 81 on Friday in Belgrade. He was born on July 9, 1932 in the Croatian town of Rijeka. His father was a diplomat and his mother was a professor. International law, human rights expert dies Dimitrijevic went to elementary and high school in Belgrade and he graduated from the Faculty of Law in Belgrade in 1956. He got his PhD in 1965. He started his career as an administrative secretary in the Yugoslav Group of the Inter-parliamentary Union from 1958 until 1959. He was a research associate of the International Politics and Economy Institute from 1959 until 1960. He then became an assistant, docent and finally a tenured professor at the Faculty of Law. Dimitrijevic hosted a television program broadcast on TV Belgrade in mid-70s when he gained popularity. He was a longtime member of the UN Human Rights Committee and a Yugoslav Forum for Human Rights president. When a new Law on the University was adopted in 1998, 16 Law Faculty professors, including Dimitrijevic, went on a strike after their colleague had been fired. Dimitrijevic was suspended and he retired immediately after his suspension was lifted. He was a Belgrade Center for Human Rights director since 1995 and a Union Faculty of Law honorary professor since 2005. Dimitrijevic became a member of the Council of Europe Venice Commission in 2000 and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2001. He was also a member of the Balkan Political Club he founded in 2001. He was an International Commission of Jurists commissioner since 2003 and a Board of Directors member since 2006. Dimitrijevic was an ad hoc judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 2001 until 2003. He was one of the founders of the International Relations Forum in 1995, a member of the Serbian PEN Center from 1986 and a visiting professor at the universities of Virginia, Oslo and Lund.
