Remains of Serbian royals lie in state in Belgrade

The remains of Prince Pavle Krađorđević, his wife Olga and son Nikola are today lying in state in Belgrade's Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel.

BELGRADE The remains of Prince Pavle Kradjordjevic, his wife Olga and son Nikola are today lying in state in Belgrade's Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel. The citizens will have a chance to pay their respects until Friday afternoon, after which the bodies of the three members of the Serbian and later Yugoslav royal family will be taken to historic Oplenac, in central Serbia, to be buried in the crypt of the Church of St. George - the resting place of their ancestors. The ceremonies today - attended by top state officials, family members, and citizens - began in front of the church, where the national anthem was sounded, after which the coffins were brought inside. Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Patriarch Irinej served liturgy for the souls of the three members of the Kradjordjevic family. President Tomislav Nikolic and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic were in attendance. The daughter of Prince Pavle, Jelisaveta (Elizabeth) Karadjordjevic and members of her family were also present at the church this afternoon, as was Crown Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic. More photos in our Gallery Prince Palve Kradjordjevic was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1893, and died in Paris, France, in 1976. After King Aleksandar I Karadjordjevic was assassinated in France in 1934, Pavle became Yugoslav regent and remained in this role until 1941 and the Nazi German occupation, when he and his family left the country and subsequently lived in exile. Declared a war criminal by the post-war Communist Yugoslav government, he was politically rehabilitated by the Serbian authorities last year, and will, along with his wife and son, be buried in Oplenac with highest state honors. President Tomislav Nikolić and Prime Minister Ivica Dačić were in attendance.

The daughter of Prince Pavle, Jelisaveta (Elizabeth) Karađorđević and members of her family were also present at the church this afternoon, as was Crown Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević.

Prince Palve Krađorđević was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1893, and died in Paris, France, in 1976.
