BELGRADE The 53rd October Salon opened in Belgrade on Saturday, and will be taking place through November 4 under the slogan, "Good Life". The event will stage multimedia works of various artists who gathered around the concept of "physical narratives and spatial imaginations". 53rd Belgrade October Salon opens This year's Salon is taking place in a worn, downtown building dating from 1905, which organizers say symbolizes "100 years of modern Serbia". The building - the former Geodetic Institute - is described as "one of the most beautiful but also one of the most neglected monumental edifices in Belgrade". After weeks of uncertainty regarding whether the Belgrade Cultural Center would receive the permission to organize the October Saloon at this location due to the very poor condition of the structure, the exhibition was opened with security measures - police and firefighters standing by. Belgrade Cultural Center Director Mia David said in her opening address that "Life is Good" was "a story of 100 years of modern Serbia or an attempt of modern Serbia - where we used to be once, some 50, 30 years ago, and where are we now, with every one of us in the run for a good life, whatever that means". "Curators Branislav Dimitrijevic and Mika Hannula presented various views of good life - what it means both on an individual and global level. Foreign artists reacted to this space, and the Belgrade atmosphere. Instead of a catalogue, we have a book and writers who also reacted to this place,” David said.
