BELGRADE Offensive posters have sprung up in the town of Novi Sad overnight, targeting the city's former mayor, Igor Pavlicic. As was the case last month, Pavlicic is once again likened to a character from BBC's sitcom "Only Fools and Horses", Rodney Trotter. Former Novi Sad mayor ridiculed in posters The detractors of the former mayor printed a catchphrase from the series, "What a Plonker", under images of actor Nicholas Lyndhurst - meant to represent Pavlicic. The former mayor, an official of the Democratic Party (DS), was removed from office in the early hours of Thursday, at the end of a stormy session of the city assembly. A coalition gathered around the Serb Progressives (SNS) is now in power in the town. SNS Novi Sad branch head Milos Vucevic was elected as new mayor, while Borko Ilic from the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) is his deputy. In his first statement after the appointment, Vucevic said that "this is not a time for a mayor who 'has no jurisdiction', but for one who solves problems". He described the newly formed City Council as a combination of "youth and experience". The assembly also replaced a number of other city officials, and appointed new directors for 16 public and utilities companies. Pavlicic also addressed reports after he was sacked to say that the vote this morning "put an end to a political crisis that was ongoing since the former city authorities were put together". "It's good that the crisis has been terminated and all these bad things should be left behind us," said he, and added that he "wished much success" to the new authorities. (Beta) Beta
