BELGRADE European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schultz did not want to formulate additional conditions for EU accession with his statement, says his spokesman. Armin Machmer said in a written statement that “unnecessary” importance was attached to Schultz’s statement and that it was misinterpreted. No new conditions for Serbia, Schultz’s spokesman says “President Schultz only gave a personal assessment of the situation, based on a realistic factual state and political pragmatism. Mr. Schultz described his view as a possible solution to not harmonized positions on recognition of Kosovo in the EU,” he explained. “I underscore once again, it was not a job or intention of the president to formulate any additional conditions for Serbia’s EU accession. This is a job of governments, their negotiators and diplomats and President Schultz stressed this in his previous statement. The future of Serbia and Kosovo is in the EU. A fundamental solution will have to found in the end of the process with a mutual consent,” Machmer said in the statement to daily Politika. Schultz said earlier that “mutual recognition of Belgrade and Pristina” is a condition that the EP expected Serbia to fulfill in order to join the EU. Martin Schultz (file) Politika
