BELGRADE The extraordinary session of the Serbian parliament planned for Wednesday has been delayed since MPs who called for the meeting withdrew their request. The agenda of the session was supposed to contain one point only, the appointment of the vice governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), and the request for the staging of the meeting was filed by NBS Governor Jorgovanka Tabakovic. MPs delay session to appoint NBS vice governor The call for the session was also sent by MPs of the ruling coalition, including the Serb Progressive Party, Socialist Party of Serbia, United Regions of Serbia, New Serbia, the Party of United Pensioners of Serbia and United Serbia. The release issued by the parliament states that Serbian Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic notified MPs that he withdrew the call for the eighth extraordinary session in 2012 because MPs who wanted the session to be held withdrew their request. Tabakovic's candidates for the position of the NBS vice governor are Ana Gavrilovic who has been performing the office since 2004, and former Minister of Finance Diana Dragutinovic who was appointed as NBS vice governor for the sector of financial stability and enhancement of financial system. Another candidate for the position is Veselin Pjescic who once held the office of director general of the sector for affairs of the monetary system and policy and currently performing the duties as the governor's advisor. While no further reasons have been given for the postponement of the session. However, it is known that the changes to the Law on the NBS - one of the first pieces of legislation brought by the country's new ruling coalition - had met with strong criticism of the IMF and the EU. Serbian PM Ivica Dacic is in Brussels this Tuesday, where he is meeting with EU officials. Last week, one of his deputies, Suzana Grubjesic, also conferred with EU officials, when representatives of the European Commission told her that Serbia could not expect to make progress toward EU membership unless it recalled the recently adopted law, which is seen as diminishing the central bank's independence.
