BELGRADE Draft amendments to the Law on the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) have arrived to the Serbian parliament. The draft envisages a change in the procedure of NBS Governor Dejan Soskic’s dismissal. Draft law on central bank arrives in parliament According to earlier announcements, parliament will discuss Soskic’s dismissal on Thursday. According to media reports, the draft was prepared by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) but the party’s whip Jorgovanka Tabakovic did not want to comment on it. According to some information, one of the changes is that parliament will be the only competent organ to dismiss the governor. According to the existing law, which has been in effect since July 2010, it is practically impossible to dismiss the governor because only the NBS Council can propose it and the Finance Committee and parliament then need to vote on it. Several NGOs and public figures have even written a letter against the governor’s dismissal, urging the government not to violate the rule of law “with the illegal dismissal of the governor”. Soskic told weekly NIN that certain Serbian businessmen were behind the attempt to relieve him of his duty. Finance and Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic said on Tuesday that he "was not a fan of the governor" but that he respected the NBS' independence. (Tanjug, file) B92 Beta
