NOVI SAD The Serb Progressive Party (SNS) launched an initiative ten days ago to change some local ruling structures in Vojvodina, says SNS official Igor Mirovic. According to him, the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) accepted the initiative two days ago. Progressives move to take over towns in Vojvodina Mirovic explained that the initiative applied to larger towns such as Kikinda, Sombor and Novi Sad where there was a possibility for the SNS and SPS to form the majority together with other parties. He stressed, however, that Novi Sad was their priority. “The main priority is Novi Sad because the Democratic Party (DS) had extremely poor results running the town from 2008 until 2012,” Mirovic noted, adding that the citizens were aware of the poor results and that the DS had therefore had significantly poorer results in the last elections in Novi Sad than before. He said that there was a big difference between the local authorities in Belgrade and Novi Sad because the DS had achieved a good result in Belgrade, “which is not the case in Novi Sad”. The SNS official noted that the fact that the Democrats had only 18 seats out of 78 in the Novi Sad city assembly proved his claims. The local authority in Novi Sad was formed by the DS, League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) and the SPS-led coalition. The DS has 18 seats, the LSV 15, including the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) candidates who were on its list, while the SPS-led coalition has seven seats. Together they have 40 out of 78 seats. On the other hand, the SNS has 15 seats, Roma Democratic Party six, Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and Dveri five each, while the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) and None of the Above have one seat each. The DS formed the Vojvodina government without the SPS after the Socialists had decided to form the Serbian government with the SNS and United Regions of Serbia (URS). SPS deputy leader Dusan Bajatovic announced on Wednesday that the local ruling structures in Vojvodina would change. URS leader Mladjan Dinkic earlier told Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik that the current local authority in Novi Sad was not certain. Commenting on Dinkic’s statement, DS deputy leader and Vojvodina Executive Council President Bojan Pajtic pointed out that a person whose first priority was to fight against political opponents instead to solve the citizens’ problems would not last long.
