BELGRADE, KOSOVSKA MITROVICA The goal of the office for Kosovo will be to preserve and increase the current number of Serbs in the province and create conditions for their better life. This is according to Aleksandar Vulin, future head of the government office for Kosovo. "Dealing with Kosovo difficult and honorable task" During a break from Monday's parliament session, Vulin told reporters the office would focus on everyday life in Kosovo, the Serbs' right to live there, the economy, implementation of Serbian laws, and strengthening of Serbia's influence in the province. "The poverty of our people is not in proportion with the amount of money Serbia sets aside for its southern province," stressed Vulin. According to him, there was no task "more difficult and honorable" than to deal with Kosovo and Metohija. He added "people needed to be told the truth in the future and their hope in survival and justice restored, in order for things to change". "There will be a completely new situation. I believe the (future) government has the resources to make life there more just and honorable," he said. The leader of the Movement of Socialists - who forged a pre-election alliance with the Progressives (SNS) - explained that it was the municipalities in Kosovo who suggested that he should head the office. "This is not a party matter. Those who see Kosovo as party loot, or part of one party, are sorely mistaken and will not be able to do absolutely anything," said Vulin. The announcement of his appointment was on Monday welcomed by Serb leaders from northern Kosovo. President of the Serb National Council Milan Ivanovic said that Vulin was "the right man for the job", and added he expected him to work to strengthen Serbia's institutions in Kosovo, lead a responsible policy and consult local Serbs and various political parties when seeking solutions for the problems in the province. This Serb leader also accused outgoing officials of the Ministry for Kosovo - that will be replaced by the government office - of "not standing against the treasonous agreements reached in Brussels by Borislav Stefanovic". "I am certain that there can be no repeat of that type of treasonous, hypocritical policy toward Kosovo and Metohija, that lacked national consciousness," concluded Ivanovic.
