BELGRADE The trade union federation Independence on Friday criticized another union organization for their comment denouncing PUPS leader Jovan Krkobabic. By considering that the office of labor minister should be given to someone “younger, braver and more capable” than Krkobabic, the Alliance of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) in fact "called for the violation of norms of human rights", a statement said. Trade unions clash over "too old to serve" remark The move has a political background - to keep Rasim Ljajic as head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, Independence added in its release. This organization's leadership and members were "confounded and disappointed by the attitude shown by the SSSS", and found it "particularly worrying" that their main and only argument behind this stance was Krkobabic's age. The leader of the Pensioners, who serves as one of deputy PMs in the outgoing government, is 83. "In this way, they (the SSSS) are calling for a direct violation of international principles and norms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, European Social Charter and a number of conventions and recommendations by the International Labor Organization," according to Independence, and added: “In other words, this is a very serious attack on the foundations of not only every democratic, but every civilized society." As for Rasim Ljajic - who serves as labor minister in the outgoing government - the union organization referred to him as "a man who purposely inflicted immeasurable damage to social dialogue processes in Serbia". Independence further added that they would "report about the extreme incident to all relevant European and international organizations to show them how Serbia was preparing for the start of negotiations with the EU". The SSSS said earlier on Friday that PUPS President Krkobabic "should not be deputy prime minister and minister of labor and social policy" in the new government. The SSSS sent an open letter to PM-designate Ivica Dacic, calling on him to - "notwithstanding the coalition agreement, reconsider his decision and thank Krkobabic for all the work he had done, give him credit for his experience, and tell him that in a situation as difficult as this one, the Serbian citizens need a vision and hard work, they need someone younger, braver and more capable".
