The main country of origin of asylum seekers in the EU is Afghanistan and Serbia is ranked fifth when it comes to the number of political asylum applications.

BRUSSELS The main country of origin of asylum seekers in the EU is Afghanistan and Serbia is ranked fifth when it comes to the number of political asylum applications. This is according to the latest report of the European statistical office Eurostat. EU: Serbia ranks fifth in number of asylum seekers The report shows that in 2011 around 230,000 asylum seekers lodged an application in the EU-27 and that every tenth applicant was Afghan. Afghanistan is followed by Russia, Pakistan and Iraq, while Serbia is ranked fifth with 13,390 asylum seekers, right in front of Somalia. Almost 10,000 of the overall number of asylum seekers came from Kosovo, which the report treated separately from Serbia. When it comes to the number of asylum seekers per million inhabitants, the greatest pressure is put on Malta, Luxembourg, Belgium and Sweden, the Eurostat reported.
