UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, should he arrive in Serbia, will be welcome "to visit every part of the country, including Kosovo", says FM Vuk Jeremic. According to UN Resolution 1244 that ended the war in 1999, Kosovo is a part of Serbia. FM: UN chief is welcome in every part of Serbia Ethnic Albanians in 2008 unilaterally declared independence, but Serbia rejected the proclamation. Commenting on the possible visit of the UN chief, Jeremic said on Tuesday that if it materializes it would represent "an important event for Serbia and the while region, because it will show the region is important for stability in the world". The chief of diplomacy, who is in September taking over as UN General Assembly president, made the comments after the presentation of UN's annual report on Serbia. The world organization's permanent representative in Serbia William Infante attended the same event, but could not confirm for reporters that Ban would visit Serbia. Infante added that concrete information would become available in the next ten days. The UN HQs in New York are yet to confirm Ban's trip to the region. The media in Belgrade is reporting today that the UN chief will be in Belgrade on July 23, where he would meet with President Tomislav Nikolic. Nikolic commented on Tuesday by saying that it was unclear if Ban would travel to Kosovo "as an independent state", and added that Serbia was "still considering how to respond to this challenge".
