If the Socialists, Progressives and the United Regions of Serbia (URS) form a government, the Democrats will hold an early election assembly for the party. The Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic will face his deputy Dragan Djilas in the election for the party leader. Daily: DS leader faces open struggle for power Several middle-ranked DS officials confirmed the information to daily Danas. However, top DS officials have not commented on it. There have been rumors that there will be changes in the DS, especially bearing in mind that latest conflict between two top DS officials Djilas and Vuk Jeremic. According to the daily's sources, the Democrats are at the moment waiting to see what would happen with the forming of the government. ”Once things have become clear, the Main Board meeting will be scheduled. Since the Main Board last had session in May, according to the Statute, the next regular session should be in late August or early September,” they explained. If Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader and PM-designate Ivica Dacic fails to form the government, the DS will hold a meeting and discuss its earlier decision that no coalition would be formed with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). However, if the SPS, SNS and URS manage to form the government, the DS Main Board is expected to hold an early election assembly in order to choose a new party leadership. According to announcements, Tadic’s opponent would be Djilas and aside from the current leader, all those who had poor election results will be dismissed. “We would then have the election assembly in the fall,” the sources from the DS pointed out. Whether Tadic will remain the DS leader will depend on whether the Main Board members will adopt his report on the party’s work between the two Main Board sessions. If they do not adopt the report, an early session will be automatically called. Danas’ sources have not ruled out the possibility, adding that there could be an “open rivalry” between Tadic and Djilas ahead of the elections in the party. An open conflict between Djilas and Jeremic broke out on Wednesday after Djilas accused his fellow DS official of getting “disgraceful” amount of money for the opening of his office in New York. The newly elected UN General Assembly president responded by accusing Djilas of “delivering the first blow to the fight for the future and soul of the DS”.
