The Democratic Party (DS) wants the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) to say whether the agreement reached on May 8 is still in effect. The Socialists did not decide with whom they would form the new government on Tuesday. “Socialists must say if agreement with DS is in effect” B92 has learnt that the SPS started its Presidency session at 21:00 CET on Tuesday. “The SPS supported the joint government led by (DS leader) Boris Tadic and the public needs to be informed whether the agreement is still in effect,” the DS said in a release. “The DS has done everything in order to form the parliamentary majority quickly so the Serbian citizens could get an efficient government. We made a deal on program with the SPS-led coalition immediately after the elections and secured the necessary majority without setting any staffing conditions and demands,” the Democrats stressed. The party added that the Democrats “insisted solely on a responsible financial policy and a resolute fight against corruption and organized crime”. “This is why the SPS needs to give an answer to the public after such a long time about what could be the obstacle to the formation of the Serbian government that was agreed in principle on May 8,” the DS noted in the release. According to the United Serbia (JS) and Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leaders, the SNS has offered the Socialists the prime minister’s position. SPS deputy leader Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic has stated that the talks with the DS are “very difficult”. SPS deputy leader Zarko Obradovic told daily Vecernje novosti that the party would announce its final decision by the end of the week and that the talks with the Democrats were not finished but that “the DS is quiet at the moment”.
