Police bust regional pyramid scheme firm

Police have arrested 24 persons on suspicion of abuse of office, tax evasion and money laundering, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said on Tuesday.

Police have arrested 24 persons on suspicion of abuse of office, tax evasion and money laundering, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Tuesday. The suspects illegally obtained EUR 27mn, the minister added. Dacic told Tanjug that the police were still searching for one more person. He explained that members of the criminal group had been arrested in Belgrade, Vranje, Valjevo, Sabac, Sremska Mitrovica, Kraljevo and Uzice. “It is suspected that the members of the criminal group from early 2004 until the end of 2011 registered companies and used them to get citizens of Serbia and other countries of the region - Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia – to join a pyramid citizens' association dubbed Gem Collection Club at the cost of EUR 2.290 per member,” the interior minister pointed out. According to him, they paid for the alleged professional training and purchase of the book called “Successful Journey”.
