The recognition of Kosovo "had never been set, nor formulated, as a condition for Serbia to start the process of admission into the European Union". This is according to a spokesman for the EU enlargement commissioner, Peter Stano, who spoke in Brussels on Tuesday. "Recognition of Kosovo not condition for talks" Beta news agency is reporting that Stano "pointed out that the EU members had been consulted regarding the reiterated stand of the EC and the EU, that the recognition of Kosovo is not a condition for Serbia to progress in approaching EU membership". According to the spokesman, "the European Council, the presidents and prime ministers of the EU, clearly said in December 2011 and March 2012, what the EU expects from Serbia in order for the EC to recommend the start of membership negotiations with Belgrade". "One of the key priorities is the achievement of lasting and tangible improvements in relations with Kosovo, and the continuation of the necessary political and economic reforms," Beta news agency is quoting the official. The statement came as reply to a question of reporters of the Kosovo Albanian language media about "whether he had also consulted the EU members who had recognized Kosovo, when he stated that the recognition of Kosovo is not a condition for Serbia's EU membership negotiations".
