Anthropologist Zagorka Golubovic spoke for B92 today to say that people in his surroundings are to blame for the presidential runoff defeat of Boris Tadic. Speaking in Belgrade on Tuesday, Golubovic also described the election of Tomislav Nikolic as the country's president as "the deepest downfall of the democratic transition". "Election of Nikolic deepest downfall of transition" According to her, intellectuals also failed, "because their task was supposed to be to explain to the citizens for whom they should have voted in the elections", while at they same time also failed "to point out to the citizens who wanted change that changes can be for the worse". Golubovic asserted that people that Tadic had surrounded himself with were "not good", and that she had warned the former president about it. "The citizens were not satisfied with politics and they objected that Tadic was not undertaking moves that were democratic enough... surrounding himself instead with people who were not democratically-minded, whose influence became more important than the influence of the people," she continued. Golubovic also believes that Tadic's "basic problem" was letting his surroundings "alienate him from the people". Meanwhile, she sees Nikolic's election success as "the deepest downfall we have faced in the otherwise winding and very loose so-called democratic transition": "I saw that we learned nothing from history and that when it comes to voting, in Serbia it's always about either punishing somebody, or about pride and defiance, rather than about goals that should be achieved. I was ashamed to belong to a nation that learned nothing from history." "It's not a problem for me that Tadic lost," continued Golubovic, "but that there was no dignified competition in the elections." There are not enough intellectuals in Serbia now to explain to the people what voting means, she added, and accused "those who once brought down Slobodan Milosevic" of now joining the ranks of the business community and the authorities. "You can rarely see intellectuals who have not adopted neo-liberal politics, which are only concerned about what may be gained. That is why I blame Tadic for having that sort of surroundings," concluded Golubovic. Zagorka Golubovic (file) B92
