JS leader urges Tadić to accept PM position

United Serbia (JS) leader Dragan Markovic Palma asked Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic on Friday to accept the prime minister’s position. Markovic, whose party is a part of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS)-led coalition, also called on Tadic to as soon as possible start talks with the parties he wanted to form the new government with. JS leader urges Tadic to accept PM position “Boris Tadic is a good candidate for prime minister but if he cannot make a majority he should say so to the Serbian citizens,” Markovic told reporters. He noted that the citizens should be told if the parties were unable to form the government “so early elections could be called”. The JS leader and Jagodina mayor stressed that the government needed to be formed quickly because of foreign investors who wanted to invest in Serbia. “They do not know what will happen, what the government would be like, what its program is like. It is very important to us to employ the Serbian citizens who do not work and we cannot employ them if we do not have investors,” he explained. Markovic gave as an example Italian factory Confezioni Andrea which had problems due to the fact that the state had not paid the first payment after the second phase of the factory construction. “They were told to wait until the new government is formed. There is no such rule in Europe when it comes to big investors,” he pointed out. The JS leader said that the fact that the Serbian dinar continued to slide against euro every day was the problem as well. “Citizens who took out home loans have problems. Wages are the same, pensions are the same. The state needs to do something. The new government needs to be formed as soon as possible,” Markovic stressed. He added he was sure that the entire SPS-Serbia-Party of United Pensioners of Serbia-JS coalition shared his opinion. “The JS will be the only party in the government that will not ask for any ministerial position.
