Ivica Dacic criticized austerity measures "imposed by the IMF" and spoke in favor of "urgent salary increases" in an interview for Beta news agency on Tuesday. One of the deputy prime ministers and interior minister in the current government, Dacic also heads the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and is a candidate in the May 6 presidential election. Dacic frowns at IMF measures, urges salary hikes Serbia's "belt-tightening" policy, which he said was imposed by the IMF, was described as "creating great damage to Serbia". "We are absolutely in favor of the opposite, against outsiders issuing commands regarding whether Serbia should sell its public companies. Right now, the IMF's condition is for Serbia to sell its publicly owned companies as soon as possible," revealed Dacic, and continued: "It wasn't bad enough that all public companies have been pillaged during the past 12 years, now we're supposed to sell anything of value left in Serbia." According to him, another demand coming from the international financial institution was for Serbia's salary funds to be reduced. "I absolutely think that is the wrong policy, and that salaries must be increased urgently, in public, state and private sectors. A program of economic development must be made, erasing any differences between domestic and foreign investors, while obligating foreign investors to respect domestic laws, workers' rights and those of trade unions," continued Dacic. Considering that he spoke on May Day, the SPS leader also called on Serbia's workers "not to vote for those who sold the factories and drove them out into the street". "As long as I am interior minister, the police will most certainly not clash with the people, but is supposed to arrest those who drove the workers out into the street," Dacic was quoted as saying.
