The Agriculture Ministry and dissatisfied farmers from Vojvodina and central Serbia have reached an agreement in principle on subsidies.

The Agriculture Ministry and dissatisfied farmers from Vojvodina and central Serbia have reached an agreement in principle on subsidies. According to the agreement, the farmers will get subsidies per hectare instead of per output. Farmers, ministry reach agreement on subsidies The farmers and ministry’s representatives reached a compromise after seven hours of negotiations. The concrete solution will be adopted during the day. The farmers have been holding protests and blocking roads across Serbia, requesting from the Agriculture Ministry to reinstate the old subsidies system according to which they get subsidies per hectare. They have announced that they will continue blocking roads until the official document is adopted. There are no more roadblocks on roads in Vojvodina. All the roads that were blocked in the last two days are open for traffic as of 08:30 CET on Friday. Assistant Agriculture Minister Milos Milovanovic told reporters after the talks that ended around 02:00 CET on Friday that the Ministry and farmers had found a solution that would respect priorities of the national agricultural policy. He explained that the policy included increase in productivity, production growth and number of farmers who would get the government subsidies. He added that the maximal payment per hectare would not be higher than RSD 12,000. Vojvodina farmers’ representative Miroslav Ivkovic has said that the farmers are ready to compromise and that they will accept RSD 12,000 per hectare instead of RSD 14,000, which was their original request.
