DSS leader Koštunica to enter presidential race

Opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica will be his party's candidate in the May 6 presidential election, it has been announced. The decision was made by the party's main board on Thursday in Belgrade. DSS leader Kostunica to enter presidential race Kostunica previously served as president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ), after he defeated Slobodan Milosevic in the September 2000 elections, and after that for two terms as Serbia's prime minister. Today, he said he accepted the candidature "in order to, as much as possible and as best I can, advocate the idea of (Serbia's) political and military neutrality". Addressing reporters during a news conference, Kostunica noted that neutrality was "a big and fateful idea, that leads Serbia out of the blind alley". "Political neutrality is another name for Serbia's freedom," he said, and added that he believed this idea was close to most Serbians, while he would work to make sure it reaches as many as possible. Kostunica also stated that Serbia will be able to, through political neutrality, arrange its relations with the EU, the Russian Federation, and the U.S. in the best possible way.
