Opposition SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic says that Boris Tadic, who resigned as the country's president today, will not be returning to the same office. Nikolic will run against Tadic and other candidates in the May 6 presidential election. "Tadic resigned - and won't be back" "Boris Tadic today submitted his resignation and he is no longer the president of Serbia. He is not, and he won't be again. I promise you that, because I know it," he told a rally of his supporters held on Thursday afternoon in Novi Sad. Nikolic also accused Tadic and his ruling Democrats of being detached from reality - of behaving "as if they lived in a movie, instead of in real life": "Tadic has obviously been told one time too many that he looks like George Clooney, so he and the Democratic Party behave as if they were in a movie, where impoverished citizens are but their extras." Nikolic described Serbia as "brimming over" with red tape, corruption, and privileges for some individuals, while most citizens lived in poverty. He also charged that there was no free media in the country, and that instead, "the authorities and the tycoons control everything we can see and read". The rally in Novi Sad today started with a minute's silence to honor the six victims of a nightclub fire in the town, who died last weekend. The rally in Novi Sad on Thursday (Beta) Earlier on Thursday, the SNS announced that its leader Tomislav Nikolic will be its candidate in the presidential elections - "with the goal of winning". The Progressives stressed that Serbia needed a president who would take care of all its citizens “and not like it has been the case until now when a party-oriented president only took care about his own and the interests of his party colleagues“. “The Serb Progressive Party’s election goal is victory. The citizens want changes, they want a successful and honest Serbia, a developed and modern state and not a country that is burdened with economic and social problems,” reads the SNS release. According to the SNS, creation of a favorable business atmosphere and opening of new jobs will be priorities of the party’s policy after the elections on May 6. “Boris Tadic and the Democratic Party (DS) have showed in the past four years that they are not capable of getting the job done. The president and Serbian government’s job is to secure institutional framework for more jobs and adequate living conditions to all citizens, so our children do not have to leave the country because they cannot secure a bare existence here,” the SNS stressed.
