The opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) today kicked off its mayoral election campaign in Belgrade, by presenting their candidate, Aleksandar Popovic. The party also presented the campaign's symbols and slogans. DSS presents campaign's "floral" visual identity DSS leader Vojislav Kostunica addressed the gathering to say that the party was launching its campaign in Belgrade "true to itself - consistently", and said its program was serious and responsible, while the DSS and the city "can both be proud of Popovic". Kostunica noted that this party official and former minister attended high school in Russia and completed his postgraduate studies in the United States, and added that "this is exactly the DSS road - both the east and the west". The party's political and economic manifestos, as well as those relating to development of Vojvodina and 21 cities and municipalities, he continued, were "serious, documentary and feasible programs, produced by teams whose members did not all come from the DSS". Political neutrality, according to Kostunica, is the basis and precondition for Serbia's development. The party's top official in charge of economic issues, Nenad Popovic, also spoke today to say that its program for Belgrade was large in volume. He presented it through 21 points, addressing, among others, job creation, introduction of electronic governance, electronic tenders, and three-month plans for savings and repayment of loans. Popovic stated that he could "loudly say today what DSS representatives were saying ahead of previous elections four years ago", and added this was the case because they did not lie. "Do not pretend, be who you are. I am inviting you to enter this campaign with a smile and without defiance. Be decent people, do not insult and divide others according to partisan affiliation, because people should be divided into good and bad," he told the gathering. DSS Belgrade branch chief Andreja Mladenovic addressed those present to say that the party was starting its city campaign on the first day of spring, "which symbolizes awakening". Cornflower was chosen as the campaign's symbol, he also revealed, along with the slogan, "Because we are not all the same". The flower appears to have been chosen as a play on words, with its name in Serbian, razlicak, being derived from the root razlika (difference).
