Serbian parliament's EU Integration Committee Chairman Laslo Varga believes Serbia cannot get a date for the start of the EU accession talks before December. He told Novi Sad-based Hungarian language daily Magyar Szo that the main condition for this was abolition of Serbia’s institutions in northern Kosovo, such as local self-governments, schools, hospitals, post offices and public companies. “Date for accession talks not before December” According to Varga, if Serbia failed to call the elections in northern Kosovo it would mean that it started to fulfill the EU conditions. He assessed that Serbia could postpone recognition of Kosovo until the signing of the EU Accession Treaty but that it would have to recognize its independence then. Varga noted that the agreement on Kosovo’s regional representation meant that Kosovo was now able to be an equal member of regional organizations. “In some next step Serbia will have to accept Kosovo’s participation in European and world organizations,” the parliament's EU Integration Committee chairman was quoted as saying. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has said he believes that Serbia could start the EU accession talks by the end of the year. EU leaders should at a summit in Brussels on Thursday make a final decision on Serbia’s EU candidate status. Beta
