EU diplomat Miroslav Lajcak has said that a decision on Serbia's EU candidate status will be made by all EU member states. He said that progress in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue was important for the EU and that there would be no new conditions for Serbia on its EU integration path. "There will be no new EU conditions" Lajcak noted that the “decision must be made by all 27 EU member states”. He told B92 that the European Council will on March 1 assess whether Serbia had fulfilled three conditions set in December. “Today we are very close to the date but we are still not there. It would be irresponsible of me to speculate now,” he pointed out. Lajcak said that the conditions were well-known and that the regional cooperation principle was one of the main principles of the EU integration. “Serbia has made a lot of progress, it expects the candidate status. It is in Kosovo’s interest to join the process. Serbia should not be burdened by EU’s attitude toward Kosovo because Serbia knows exactly what it needs to do,” he explained. The managing director for Russia, Eastern Neighborhood and the Western Balkans at the EU European External Action Service repeated that some EU member states did not recognize Kosovo but that all of them recognized the region’s European perspective. When asked whether the EU expected Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence, Lajcak said that there was not a single European document in which such request was made.
