Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simic says that Serbia is "not without a chance" as it awaits on a EU decision on its candidate status bid. In a statement for B92 on Tuesday, Simic noted that the success of the Belgrade-Pristina talks and Serbia's EU candidature also depended on the activities of international factors which exerted influence on the institutions in Pristina. Serbia "not without chance" ahead of EU decision This expert in international relations believes that international representatives "could suggest to Pristina to accept a compromise with Serbia, after which it could be given the status of candidate." "Another negative appraisal would distance Serbia from Brussels and Brussels from Serbia. The situation would become very unpredictable not only in Serbia, but also in the Balkans. I think that is the reason why despite all the negative news that are arriving one after another, Serbia is not without its chances in the new appraisal," Simic was quoted as saying. He also believes that the Kosovo talks in Brussels on Tuesday would be "decisive for the March decision on Serbia's candidature for EU membership". A solution "to the problem between Belgrade in Pristina, and with it the possible receiving of the candidate status", Simic continued, "would ensure some kind of peace in the Balkans", and mentioned this in the context of the economic crisis in the EU. He added that Belgrade and Pristina "seem to have gotten closer in their positions", and that the two sides will likely agree for Kosovo to be represented in international forums with a footnote referencing UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. According to him, "it is known" that Belgrade will not accept a footnote referencing the Kosovo Albanian UDI, "as Pristina is insisting". "Pristina will do what the EU tells it to, and for the EU solving the problems between Belgrade and Pristina is the tip of the fat berg (sic)," said Simic. The final decision on Serbia's bid to become candidate for EU membership will be known on March 1. B92
