Justice Minister Snezana Malovic says there is a possibility of an out-of-court settlement with the parents of the murdered French football fan Brice Taton. They announced they would file a lawsuit against the state of Serbia, seeking compensation. Justice minister: Serbia could settle in Taton case Brice Taton was brutally killed on September 17, 2009, when he traveled to Belgrade to attend a football match between his home team of Toulouse and local club Partizan. Several hours before the game, Taton and his friends were attacked in downtown Belgrade. The 28-year-old died September 29 at a Belgrade hospital from severe head and chest trauma sustained in the attack. This January, the Court of Appeals in Belgrade reduced the prison sentences against 14 people convicted in the case. In January last year, they were sentenced to four to 35 years in prison, but will now have to serve only four to 15 years. Noting it is early to talk about an out-of-court settlement before seeing the lawsuit, Malovic said she is in favor of reaching an agreement in such cases. She told B92 that a suit is expected and that she will review all the facts in the suit, as well as the court ruling. Taton's parents will sue the Serbian state for damages, the Brice Taton association said on its website. "Our last recourse now is suing the state of Serbia for damages due to serious security oversights in the organization of a sports event, says the release". On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Taton family would seek EUR 300,000 in damages, accusing the state of Serbia of "not doing anything to prevent the incident". Belgrade-based Blic newspaper writes that Taton's parents and sister will seek to each receive EUR 100,000. Their lawyer in Serbia, Slobodan Ruzic, said that the Tatons would not sue "the football fans", and explained this was because those were "young, unemployed persons". (Tanjug, file) B92 Tanjug
