Vojislav Kostunica on Monday demanded an apology from the German ambassador to Serbia, and said the diplomat had "abused the trust" he enjoyed in the country. Kostunica, leader of the opposition DSS party and former prime minister, is a vocal critic of Serbia's EU integration policy, who last week spoke about the implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) to say that it caused Serbia to lose money. DSS leader wants German ambassador to apologize In reaction to his statement, German Ambassador Wolfram Maas on Monday said that "whoever says that either doesn't know what it's about, or is simply lying. In three years of the implementing of the agreement, EUR 500mn was lost, but 1.5bn was gained." "In his public address, the German ambassador dared to abuse the trust given to him as a foreigner by the state of Serbia. I wonder how it is possible, and why Maas, as a German, takes the liberty to address me - the president of a Serbian opposition party - to say that I 'either do not know what it's about, or am simply lying'," Kostunica said. The ambassador's manner, he continued, requires an urgent apology, "above all to the state of Serbia": "It cannot be that Germany and its ambassador can behave like a power in Serbia and address an opposition leader and former president and prime minister in this manner. If that is allowed to happen today, tomorrow the German ambassador will become even more arrogant, on behalf of his country." "Germany is a big country, but its representatives never have been, and never will be the authority in Serbia. It is necessary for Maas to learn elementary etiquette - otherwise, he is welcome to leave Serbia," the DSS president said in his reaction. "I will not say that Maas is lying when he says Serbia is gaining from the SAA, although he is speaking untruths. However, before we engage in any kind argumentation and debate, the German ambassador ought to bring his behavior in line with that of civilized behavior," concluded Kostunica.
