The Serbian government recommended Friday preventive measures to eliminate problems with energy supply and enable the proper work of the energy system. Serbia has for the past week experienced weather conditions of heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures. Govt. makes recommendations as cold snap continues The government has instructed the Ministry of Education and Science to consider the possibility to suspend or limit the work of institutions of primary, secondary and higher education and of student centers. Industrial customers are recommended to reduce energy consumption to a technological minimum while other consumers are advised to rationalize consumption of energy. Local authorities are also advised to reduce the use of electricity for street lighting, billboards and neon signs. Also, the Serbian government recommended to energy companies to inform customers about the necessary rationalization of energy consumption. Advisor to Serbian Prime Minister for Energy Petar Skundric said that a historic maximum in power consumption of 160 million kwh per day was reached, as well as a record gas consumption of 15 million cubic meters per day. Skundric expects in the next 10 days temperatures as low as minus 24 degrees Celsius and still greater increase in energy consumption. He added that the government has approved emergency import of power because all power plants are working in over-strained regime. After a meeting of the working group for safe energy supply of the Ministry of Energy, Skundric said that one of the measures that the working group will propose is a temporary closure of schools and the reduction of energy consumption in large industrial systems in the country. Power cuts are not being considered, as this would not ensure that the energy system will function adequately, he said. Skundric appealed to citizens and industry to be rational and save energy. He said that gas deliveries to Serbia decreased by two million cubic meters due to cold weather that has affected most of Europe, and added that this is compensated by supply from underground gas storage unit Banatski Dvor.
