Serbia needs to continue to implement all the criteria necessary for visa-free regime with the EU, ex-EP Rapporteur for Visa Liberalization Tanja Fajon says. “It is very important for Serbia to continue implementing, with the full responsibility, all the criteria necessary for maintaining the visa-free regime, while the European Commission's proposal to establish a mechanism for a temporary suspension of the visa-free regime is still under consideration,” Fajon told Tanjug. Serbia must follow visa-free regime criteria - EP official The Slovenian MEP is now a member of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. “We at the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs have expressed certain concern and we especially sought for a more engaged role of the European Parliament in the matter and some improvements to be made to the text,” she stressed, adding that this was primarily related to provisions concerning the increase in the number of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants in the member states. She said that the Committee would hold a closing debate on the issue before the final vote on the document that was scheduled for late January. “Denmark, the country currently presiding over the EU, wants the European institutions to reach an agreement on a mechanism for a temporary suspension of the visa-free regime by the end of June the latest,” Fajon concluded. The Slovenian MEP is now a member of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

“We at the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs have expressed certain concern and we especially sought for a more engaged role of the European Parliament in the matter and some improvements to be made to the text,” she stressed, adding that this was primarily related to provisions concerning the increase in the number of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants in the member states.

She said that the Committee would hold a closing debate on the issue before the final vote on the document that was scheduled for late January.
