American choreographer, dancer and teacher Bruce Steivel is the newly appointed director of the Serbian National Theater (NP) Ballet. Steivel, introduced by the National Theater as an internationally recognized choreographer and teacher, on Thursday addressed reporters in Belgrade to say that while tradition was important, the repertoire of the house should also include modern ballet performances. U.S. choreographer made head of NP Ballet Steivel thanked National Theater Governor Bozidar Djurovic for the opportunity to take over as new director of the Ballet. "I have to say that it is different here, the system is different compared to what I have got used to in the countries where I worked previously," Steivel noted, and added that "what is common to all theaters, though, is that we can always achieve what we have in mind, regardless of whether it is opera, ballet, drama, regardless of the segment of theater we are talking about." He expressed the desire for the Ballet to continue the cooperation with similar houses in the region, Europe and around the world, as well as for Serbia's theater to participate in festivals. Previously, Steivel served as Artistic Director of Bern Stadt Theater in Switzerland, the Hong Kong Ballet, the Universal Ballet of Korea and most recently Nevada Ballet Theater, where he worked for over a decade. Steivel is frequently sought after as a guest teacher, teaching for Nederland Dans Theater, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Hungarian National Ballet, the National Ballet of Portugal, the Berlin Stadstoper, Beijing Ballet, Shanghai Ballet, Bat-Dor of Israel, the National Institute of Istanbul, Turkey and numerous schools in Japan and America, said the National Theater of their newly appointed director of the Ballet.
