Former Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov has passed away at the age of 95, it has been announced in Skopje on Monday. Gligorov, born in 1917 in the town of Stip, was the first president of Macedonia after this former Yugoslav republic became independent. In the post-war Yugoslavia (FNRJ), he served in several state offices, to later be elected as vice president of the federal government (SIV) in the renamed Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ). He also sat on the country's Presidency, and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia Central Committee. In 1974, the Macedonian politician was elected as SFRJ Assembly speaker for a mandate of four years. In his professional career, Gligorov worked as professor at Belgrade's Faculty of Economics. Gligorov was first elected president of the Socialist Republic (SR) of Macedonia in January 1991, to then, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, serve as the new country's president for two terms, until November 1999. In 1995, he survived an assassination attempt. He was severely wounded in the attack, losing one eye. Gligorov will be buried in Skopje on Tuesday, it has been announced. Gligorov was educated in Skopje and Belgrade, and joined the Communist resistance during the Second World War.
