Serbia’s Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic has stated that he does not see a single reason why Serbia would not get the EU candidate status. He told daily Kurir that it did not depend on Serbia whether it would get the candidate status in March. EU candidacy “does not depend on Serbia” “Before the European Council meeting we received opinion of the European Commission that completely supported everything that Serbia had done and recommended the candidate status and the continuation of the dialogue and implementation of the things that had been agreed. We did all that,” the prime minister stressed. Commenting on the agreements between Belgrade and Pristina, Cvetkovic noted that Serbia would continue to stick to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, adding that he was convinced that Serbia’s stance would get confirmation. He said that the announced referendum in northern Kosovo would be a mistake and a bad move and that we should not “go for” easy solutions that could have negative consequences. Commenting on the upcoming parliamentary elections, the PM pointed out that the elections would be called in March and that a deadline for their holding was May 6. “I am sure that the ruling coalition will have an opportunity to form a new government. I personally do not think about the new PM term. Wait, first things first,” he said. According to him, Serbia will have a modest economic growth of about 1.5 percent of GDP in 2012 and some significant improvement cannot be expected. “I also do not expect deterioration. I think we should look forward to the next year with certain optimism,” Cvetkovic concluded. Mirko Cvetkovic (Tanjug, file) Beta
