DS Political Council chair Dragoljub Micunovic says that negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina should continue, as well as reforms in Serbia. The veteran official of the ruling Democrats (DS), who serves as MP in the Serbian parliament and is a member of the permanent delegation of to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, recalled that he had made a proposal to the Council of Europe to resolve the Kosovo problem "internationally". "EU bid not matter of life and death" This means to continue the dialogue first and then schedule a Belgrade-Pristina-EULEX conference under UN auspices, Micunovic said. It was wrong to present the issue of granting Serbia the candidate status for EU membership to the public as crucial, Micunovic told B92, adding that it is a matter of time. "It's wrong that the issue of being given the candidate status (for EU membership) was presented as a matter of life and death," he said. Asked whether Serbia was asked to recognize Kosovo's independence in the final stages of talks on status in Brussels recently, Micunovic said he could not say whether it really was the case: "I do not know if and to whom they said this, but all my contacts that were here and in Europe during my visits are such that I never heard this demand: formally recognize Kosovo, and then everything will be fine." He added that "his experience shows that such a request will not be formally made soon". Postponing the awarding of candidate status was disappointing, because Serbia considered that it had done everything that had been expected and that, given the fact that the EC report was positive, it believed that the status of candidate was certain, he said. Asked if the DS was disoriented, Micunovic said that the idea of Serbia as a modern, legal state in which the rule of law is respected was the basis for forming the party and that in that sense, postponing the awarding of the status of candidate cannot disorient it.
