Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hocevar wished a merry Christmas to all who celebrate the holiday according to the Gregorian calendar. In his message, the archbishop said that the entire mankind should aspire towards enlightenment and spirituality, the absence of which "creates fertile ground for darkness, lies, hate and injustice. According to him, Christmas is a family holiday and should not be turned into merely tradition, folklore and days of entertainment. He also presented the message by Pope Benedict XVI for World Peace Day, in which the head of the Roman Catholic Church on December 16 spoke words of encouragement to young people and stressed the importance of family and upbringing for the creation of true peace. The country's minority Catholic and Protestant Christians will celebrate Christmas on December 25, while the Orthodox majority will mark this holiday on January 7.
