Boris Tadic has stated that the demand for Serbia to recognize Kosovo as independent "came in the final moments of the (EU) candidate status negotiations". Without addressing where the demand came from, the Serbian president said that Serbia "did not accept it". Tadic: Serbia was asked to recognize Kosovo Tadic made the comments today in the wake of statements made by Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, who said recognizing Kosovo was a condition for Serbia to become a candidate for EU membership. Tadic confirmed for reporters in Kragujevac, central Serbia, that the demand had in fact been made, but added: "However, not in that way". "We did not accept it, nor will we be accepting it," he stated. Serbia will now have to fight through political means to convince its European partners that the recognition of independence was something completely impossible, said the president. Tadic pointed out that Serbia had no intention to give up on UN Security Council Resolution 1244 because it had brought peace to Kosovo and Metohija, saving human lives. The UN resolution is a legal basis from which to find a solution to the problems in Kosovo, Tadic said and added that he had a clear political plan as to how such a solution should look like and that, if the relevant talks reach successful completion, he would come out with the solution in public. In any case, Tadic said, “we have all, both our diplomacy and all those involved in European integration, had all of our energy spent in defending our integrity and in making efforts to obtain the candidate status.” Tadic also said that the current government had had to endure a terrible criticism of acting as traitors, but that "now it had proved that it was not true". Thanking Russia for the humanitarian aid sent to Kosovo, he added that no convoy carrying aid to Serbs in Kosovo should be stopped as they were today “the most vulnerable ethnic group in Europe.” Tadic is seen touring the Fiat factory in Kragujevac on Tuesday (Tanjug)
