Serbia's Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic has said he is going to try and persuade Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic to withdraw his resignation. Djelic submitted his resignation letter after the European Council’s decision to postpone granting Serbia EU candidate status. “Deputy PM should withdraw resignation” "I will talk to him and try to convince him to withdraw the resignation, because I do not think he did a bad job," Cvetkovic told B92. “Djelic decided to resign out of moral reasons, because he had stated carelessly Serbia would certainly get the candidate status and that he would resign if that did not happen,” the prime minister explained. "The resignation is his personal act, but that act is not connected to his contribution to EU integration, but to the lack caution in announcing the date," he added. The prime minister sees the postponement of the status decision as part of the process, which had had interruptions but in which Serbia constantly moved forward. "If we view everything in continuity, we will experience progress and stagnation in the process. I see this as stagnation," Cvetkovic remarked. “The result of the Friday meeting of EU leaders in Brussels will not have an economic effect on Serbia or its people,” he stressed. Commenting on the talks between Belgrade and Pristina and Kosovo's participation in regional meetings, he said the minimum defined by UN Security Council Resolution 1244 could not be violated. "The point is there needs to be an asymmetrical approach at international meetings, with Kosovo under UN protectorate. They do not want UNMIK mentioned under Kosovo's name, so we proposed the writing Kosovo according to Resolution 1244," Cvetkovic concluded. Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic has said that the prime minister should resign just like Djelic since Serbia failed to get the EU candidate status on Friday. “The government is irresponsible, it has not solved a single problem, it is only telling us that we need to solve the issues in Kosovo and Metohija in order to get the EU candidate status. What about the corruption in the state? This is a corrupt, partisan state,” he pointed out. The SNS leader believes that the European Council’s decision will have negative consequences that citizens will feel and that the government will not take the responsibility for it.
