The EU decision not to grant Serbia candidate status today prompted the opposition SRS party to organize a gathering in front of the presidency building. The party's officials and MPs rallied under the slogan "Serbia does not want to join the European Union". Opposition party stages rally against EU bid They said that the process of the country's EU integration should be abandoned. "Our agony will continue over the next three months, and they will do everything to literally to tear Serbia apart,” SRS Vice-President Dragan Todorovic said. He told journalists that the EU will use the next three months to force Serbia fulfill the demands of Brussels, which means that it would have to "accept all statehood attributes of (Kosovo Albanian PM) Hashim Thaci.” He added that the EU will not only snatch away Kosovo and Metohija, but it will also work on a further disintegration of Serbia and make pressure for the independence of Vojvodina and autonomy of the Raska District - Serbia's southwestern region informally known as Sandzak. "Their ultimate goal is to reduce Serbia down to a Belgrade province," Todorovic underlined, and added that the admission into the EU would also destroy the country's economy. "Serbia has no alternative. Long live great Serbia, long live (SRS leader and Hague indictee) Vojislav Seselj," said SRS official Zoran Krasic. Speaking about the Kosovo dialogue, SRS MP Vjerica Radeta said that "everything Belgrade signed so far is of no consequence to the SRS and the people in Serbia". She also stated that Tadic was violating the Constitution, noting that this was a criminal offense. SRS Vice-President Milorad Mircic said that "what Serbia needs is not the EU, but rather a preservation of the country's integrity and sovereignty", and stressed that Serbian President Boris Tadic was "doing all he can to exclude Kosovo from Serbia". Mircic described the European Union as "a house of cards that's just about to collapse". The SRS officials set the EU flag on fire, and left a geographic map and a copy of the country's Constitution for Tadic, but did not hand the items to him personally. The gathering went peacefully, with police out in force around the presidency building. (Beta)
