Serbia's Deputy PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says that the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) thinks Serbia should be granted EU candidate status. "SPD leader in the European Parliament Martin Schulz, who will become the president of the European Parliament after New Year, has informed us he is going to talk to Chancellor Angela Merkel once again to persuade her to reconsider the joint view being prepared for the Council of Europe meeting on December 9," he added. “German SDP thinks Serbia should become candidate” “It is obvious there are different views about EU enlargement on the German political scene, which means there are also different views about whether Serbia should become a EU candidate,” Dacic remarked. "In view of that, there will definitely be uncertainty about Germany's final opinion in the coming days. Chancellor Angela Merkel's statement indicates the opinion is negative at the moment," he pointed out. "In any case, Serbia should continue to develop good relations with German political factors," the minister added. Dacic and Serbian President Boris Tadic are in Germany attending a congress of the SPD. The deputy PM met with officials of the German Interior Ministry and commented that the cooperation between the two ministries was at a very high level. "We are soon going to sign a police cooperation agreement and we are working to reduce the large number of asylum seekers coming from Serbia," he stated. He pointed out that was the first time in years the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) had been invited to an SPD congress and added that the SPD had supported the SPS in its European path and in joining the European Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists.
