The EU member states are still consulting ahead of their decision on Serbia’s EU candidate status. Germany, Great Britain and Austria are suspicious while France is trying to soften Berlin’s stance, daily Vecernje novosti writes. Daily: Three EU members against Serbia’s candidacy Daily’s sources from Brussels claim that a tough diplomatic struggle will last until the last moment and that the final decision will be made on Monday at a meeting of EU foreign ministers. European Council’s decision on December 9 will depend on this decision. Most of the EU member states believe that Serbia should be granted the candidate status so everything depends on the countries that are still suspicious about the idea, the daily writes. Paris and Berlin have different positions regarding Serbia and Montenegro’s EU integration. France supports Serbia’s candidacy but it does not support an idea of giving Montenegro a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks. Germany, on the other hand, does not want Serbia to get the candidate status but it supports the decision to start the accession negotiations with Podgorica. France is at the moment trying to convince Germany that a decision not to grant Serbia the candidate status would have a negative impact on the country’s further EU integration process and the situation in the entire Balkans. In return Paris is willing to offer its cooperation regarding Montenegro. Serbia and the officials in Brussels still believe that Germany would soften its stance over the weekend. Serbian President Boris Tadic will visit Germany on Sunday. Commenting on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statement that Serbia does not meet the EU requirements at the moment, Belgrade team chief Borislav Stefanovic said that “our delegation is in Brussels precisely in order to fulfill them”.
