Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says his recent statements about Kosovo did not amount to advocating the need to launch a new war there. Speaking on Monday in Belgrade during a ceremony to award police officers wounded while confronting post office robbers, he also offered to resign if his comments damaged the country's national interests. IM says he "did not call for war over Kosovo" "What was I supposed to say? Thank you, Thaci, go ahead and kill all Serbs in northern Kosovo? That would be the same as if someone said, 'the guilty party are those who defended the post office from the robbers," said he. He also called on Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci and Serbs in northern Kosovo "not to cause incidents and to remain cool-headed". "If I'm to blame, I'll resign. I never called for war, I called on Thaci not to cause one," Dacic continued, and added that this was the kind of message that should be sent by the international community. The interior minister, who is also one of the deputy prime ministers in the current government, also criticized the fact Serbia tolerated displays of Albanian flags in southern Serbian on Albania's national day, November 28. He also wondered if ethnic Albanians in that area were "a minority of Albania, or Kosovo". "Watch if you see any Serbian flags noticeable during those gatherings. When I was in Cleveland, there were both Serbian and U.S. flags on both sides," the minister said of his recent trip to the U.S. Last week, Ivica Dacic said that Hashim Thaci should be aware that by attacking Serbs and the town of Kosovska Mitrovica in northern Kosovo he would also be attacking Belgrade, and that Serbia "could not calmly stand by". Dacic also stated that rejecting the possibility of going to war amounted to sending Thaci the wrong message, because the region's security requires "a balance of fear". Ivica Dacic (Tanjug, file)
