Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica has said that talks about Serbia’s EU candidacy have become “meaningless”. He added that Serbia and the EU should talk about economic cooperation instead. Talks about Serbia’s EU candidacy “meaningless” Kostunica believes that the time for the talks with the EU was up the moment when the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) was signed and Serbia agreed with 22 EU member states that have recognized Kosovo’s independence. He told daily Press that the relations with the EU needed to be redefined because of the situation in the Union itself and “the great crisis due to which the EU will look significantly different tomorrow than it does today”. Kostunica stressed that it was already talked about the EU’s reconstruction and introduction of “three leagues” and that Serbia would be destined to end up in the third one. “Obtaining of the EU candidate status is a ‘paper crown’ after that we need to get a date for the negotiations,” he explained. “I think that the candidacy is just means of higher pressure and blackmail of Serbia for the western powers so they would finish their ‘independent Kosovo’ project,” the DSS leader pointed out. He believes that by adopting regulations that would allow implementation of the conclusions made in the Belgrade-Pristina talks, the Serbian government would accept and recognize Kosovo institutions and their documents through the back door. “And once they sign the agreement on the integrated management of borders, the phrase ‘we will never recognize Kosovo’ will fly away like the tiniest fig leaf,” the DSS leader pointed out. Commenting on possible coalitions, he said that the DSS would act according to its policy in talks with possible partners. Kostunica stressed that he did not care about being in power since he had been there three times and voluntarily left all three times, adding that he cared about the ideas and policy he believed in.
