Deputy PM Ivica Dacic says "the climate is favorable" for Serbia to obtain an EU candidate status in early December. Speaking in Brussels on Wednesday, after a series of meetings with European officials, he noted, however, that it would be wrong to increase pressures on Serbia at this moment. "Favorable climate" for Serbia's EU candidacy Dacic conferred with EU facilitator in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue Robert Cooper, Managing Director for the Western Balkans in the EU's External Action Service Miroslav Lajcak, and MEP and Chairman of the Friends of Serbia group Victor Bostinaru. "All of them, including Cooper, pointed out that significant progress was made in the dialogue with Pristina," Dacic said, adding that favorable climate has been created for the European Council to grant Serbia an EU candidate status in early December. Dacic particularly referred to the talks with Cooper on the implementation of the reached agreements. "Serbia should openly say what it wants and can do, rather than what it cannot and will not do," Dacic stressed, taking the request for suspension of issuing of licence plates to the citizens living in Kosovo-Metohija as an example of what could not be done. Many EU officials believe now is the right time to exert pressures on Belgrade to accept what it might not accept in the later phase of EU integration, Dacic said, adding that such an opinion is wrong. Serbia is dedicated to the continuation of the EU pathway, with protection of national interests, Dacic underlined. Ivica Dacic (Tanjug)
