Kosovo assembly Speaker Jakup Krasniqi has said that it is necessary for Kosovo and Serbia’s borders to be mutually recognized. He said that a joint control of the borders could be possible after that. “First recognition of borders, then joint control” “We are in favor of the joint control of the borders but before that both countries should recognize those borders and they should be determined in the two countries’ assemblies,” Krasniqi pointed out. According to Kosovo Albanian analyst Shenol Muharemi, joint border control, which represents one of the European principles, represents control of state borders but Serbia does not recognize Kosovo borders. “It is essentially important that this border is a state border and every other form is against the Constitution. It has happened before that an agreement is reached which is not operational and which cannot be implemented due to political complexity. Therefore, aside from the fact that those should be state borders, it is necessary to also provide an agreement which will be possible to implement,” Muharemi stressed. He added that it was important to treat all four crossings with Serbia that way and not only the Jarinje and Brnjak crossings. Kosovo assembly Legislative Committee President and Arben Gashi has stated that Kosovo negotiating team should act transparently and believes that assembly’s role in ratification of a possible agreement is necessary. “Every agreement which is of political importance for Kosovo’s future should certainly go through assembly because the MPs are the only representatives of the people and they defend their interests,” he explained.
