Serbia needs to say it loud and clear that its goal is "independence of Serbs in northern Kosovo", Deputy PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has said. He added that everything needed to be discussed, even the exchange of territory. Interior minister: Time for more decisive action The interior minister told daily Vecernje Novosti that it was time for a more decisive action and that Belgrade should not just keep saying “Kosovo is Serbia”. “If we say that we will just peacefully watch what Albanians are doing than it is a disastrous message. (Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim) Thaci needs to know that an armed assault on Serbs will not go without response. I am not threatening anyone but I’m saying clearly that Serbia will defend its people in Kosovo,” he was quoted as saying. Dacic explained that even though Serbia claimed that Kosovo was its integral part, it could hardly achieve sovereignty. Still, he believes that the Albanians have their sovereignty “until the first fog”. “Helicopters won’t be able to take them to the so-called customs in the north then. This is exactly why I am talking about demarcation,” he pointed out. When asked whether German Chancellor Angela Merkel had said that Serbs needed to shut down their institutions in northern Kosovo, the minister said that she had. “But the same day at lunch she said: ‘Why couldn’t Kosovo be a federation?’ That’s an interesting topic that nobody has mentioned so far,” Dacic stressed. He added that he had been asked by Western officials what kind of facility Serbia and Russia were building in the southern Serbian town of Nis. “I said that it was a humanitarian emergency situation response center. There is no doubt that some of the most powerful EU countries are jeopardizing our national interests with constant pressure and, on the other hand, we have Russia which is the main defender of those interests. Big pressure causes big reaction and I would not rule out a possibility that someone else who comes to power says out of revolt ‘A Russian base will be in Nis as of today’,” the interior minister stressed.
