The EU Delegation to Bosnia head says no country in the region could advance in the European integration without ensuring freedom of the media and expression. At the opening of the first Southeast Europe Media Conference, organized in Sarajevo by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Peter Sorensen said the EU expected concrete steps from countries in the region and the review of all laws relating to the media, in order to provide journalists with better protection. "No progress toward EU without media freedom" "The EU sees freedom of expression and media as very important, as a fundamental human right and a key pillar of the democratic management of human society," said Sorensen, adding that all future EU members would have to adhere to the standards demanded by the EU in this field. Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE media freedom representative, said that the EU ought to insist more on media freedom because the situation in the media and journalism in the countries of the region had reached its lowest level in the last five years and was far from "rosy". According to her, last year the OSCE had to intervene more often than ever before because media freedom was endangered.
