Austria has been asked to accept EU’s enlargement in the western Balkans, Vienna-based daily Die Presse writes today. According to the daily, the European Commission (EC) will next week suggest that Serbia should be given the EU candidate status. Serbia will become EU candidate - daily “Concrete negotiations due to unresolved differences in Kosovo however will not start,” the daily added and pointed out that Montenegro, on the other hand, would start its accession negotiations with the EU. Die Presse claims that the information came from the European Council and the Council of Europe, stressing that the EC will most likely present its proposal on Wednesday. After that the member states will make their decision, probably in December. The Vienna-based daily assessed that Belgrade had a good chance since the accession negotiations would not begin, adding that tensions in Kosovo had almost jeopardized Serbia’s EU accession. The daily claims that, despite the unsolved Kosovo issue, Brussels points out that Serbia has implemented numerous reforms, primarily in judiciary and combat against corruption which allow the country to come closer to the EU. However, a deciding factor for the proposed candidate status was Hague indictees Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic’s arrest and extradition. The daily says that situation in Montenegro has recently clearly improved. Brussels claims that progress made in reforms has made it possible to start the EU accession negotiations. However, the process in Macedonia's case is still open. The country still has not resolved the name dispute with Greece, which is halting its EU integration process, the daily writes.
